This study explores a rhythm-centered educational approach to promote active appreciation in students' learning of Korean classical poetry. Traditional approaches to teaching classical poetry have predominantly focused on formal elements like meter, often emphasizing the imposition of rules on students. However, this method has limitations in fostering meaningful connections between students and individual works of poetry. In response, this study redefines the concept of rhythm, drawing from Henri Meschonnic's theory, and proposes a rhythm-centered educational model that helps students actively engage with the emotions and meanings of poems through their experience of rhythm. Through an experiment with high school students, the participants engaged with Cheongsanbyeolgok and Sin Heum’s Sijo, discovering rhythm on their own by focusing on repeated phrases, similar consonant repetitions, and recurring sentence endings. This process demonstrated the potential for students to achieve an integrated understanding of form and meaning. By expanding the scope of poetry education to include rhythm, this study presents educational insights that support students' independent appreciation of poetry and contributes to exploring the practical application of a rhythm-centered approach in future education.
