The marine bioindustry applies biotechnology to marine bioresources to produce materials and services beneficial to humanity. It also supports sustainable economic development, addresses biodiversity and global warming issues, and provides alternatives to depleting terrestrial resources. However, the domestic marine bioindustry remains underdeveloped, small-scale com- pared to the global market, lacks adequate support systems, and faces challenges in research and development efficiency. Recently, its national significance has been highlighted, and related plans have been consistently implemented. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has established marine bioindustrial infrastructure across five regions-Central, Eastern, Southeast, Southwest, and Jeju-by creating marine bioclusters and expanding biobanks. To advance the marine bioindustry, an R&D plan linking marine-related universities with regional specialized complexes is crucial. Additionally, efforts should focus on nurturing professional talent, creating jobs, and fostering a virtuous business cycle that revitalizes local economies through partnerships with regional marine bio companies.
