For the research of architectural skin in French contemporary architectural design, investigation on characteristics and meaning of ornamental skin including literature review has been conducted. The 8 typical architectural cases and 5 architects which appearing diverse ornaments in architectural elevation have been analyzed. The result of this research can be summarized as followed. First of all, the ornamental skin has repetitive pattern and form in the wall and roof to make spatial atmosphere with light and color. The second one is that ornamental skin makes elevation itself, but it compensates existed elevation and complex spatial composition with double layer in remodeling cases. The third one is that the ornamental skin in remodeling cases represents the new contemporary architectural style and it is compared with the past architectural style and co-exist together the different architectural styles. Based on the result, the ornamental skin in French contemporary architecture can be improved as a new architectural concept and a communication role to overcome the existed Semper’s Bekleidungstheorie.
