Due to the recent population decline, which has resulted in fewer students, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced the “Residential-Commercial Mixed Schools” plan. However, this plan raises concerns about potentially diminishing students’ social interactions by disrupting the connection between schools and the surrounding community. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore strategies for enhancing social interactions within Residential-Commercial Mixed Schools. The research methodology is grounded in sociologist Georg Simmel’s theory of the “sociology of space.” An analytical framework is developed to identify key spatial elements that foster social interaction within these schools, and the characteristics of selected case types are thoroughly analyzed. Important considerations include the integration of connecting spaces between facilities, the implementation of horizontally clustered spatial structures, the qualitative specialization of spaces and programs, and the incorporation of buffer zones and open external areas.
