This investigation aims to identify the roles of discourse markers in e-mails which Korean university students send professors for a variety of reasons. The main focus is to find out what kinds of discourse markers are employed, what situations these markers are used in, and how they are connected to the feature of professor-student e-mails. Analyzing 186 e-mails, 160 discourse markers including 51 connective adverbs, 57 talumi anila (다름이 아니라), and 52 hoksi (혹시) were found. In Korean society, the relationship between professors and students tends to be vertical, which leads students to use various strategies to be as polite as possible when sending e-mails. Using discourse markers such as talumi anila and hoksi is one of the ways to show that students try not to threaten professors' negative face and sometimes to minimize the threat to their positive face. Furthermore, connective adverbs such as kuliko (그리고) and ttohan (또한) are employed to ask more than one question so as not to waste time for the professor to read or answer e-mails. Consequently, students are aware of the possibility of disturbing professors when they write an e-mail, and that awareness leads them to use various discourse markers for politeness
