This qualitative study investigates the metaphor-related reading difficulties experienced by Korean EFL college students. Recognizing that metaphors are culturally loaded expressions, the present study explores which factors contribute to reading difficulties when interpreting cultural metaphor-laden English texts and how students perceive and respond to these challenges. Twenty Korean students in an English program in the United States participated in reading recall tasks and semi-structured interviews, where they reflected on their strategies for interpreting metaphors and the challenges they faced. The findings highlight participants’ reliance on syntactic clues, visual imagery, and cultural references to infer metaphorical meanings, while also exposing common difficulties, including literal translation, cultural dissonance, and evolving language use. These results underscore the importance of explicit metaphor instruction and culturally relevant context in enhancing metaphor comprehension for L2 learners. The study concludes with recommendations for teaching strategies to address these challenges, contributing to improved reading skills in multicultural language learning environments.
