This essay analyzes Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ through the philosophies of Gilles Deleuze, Jean-Luc Nancy, and Immanuel Kant. Deleuze’s concepts of the “Body without Organs” (BwO), “pure becoming,” and “becoming-imperceptible” illuminate Jesus’ internal struggle and spiritual transcendence. Scorsese’s use of light, shadow, and landscapes is linked to Kant’s and Nancy’s sublime, while Deleuze’s “affect” deepens the emotional impact. Jesus’ transformation through the crucifixion symbolizes the dissolution of the self and union with the divine. By applying Deleuze’s time-image theory to the film’s non-linear structure, this essay offers fresh insight into Jesus’ spiritual journey. The comparison with Shakyamuni Buddha’s transcendence in Little Buddha through the concept of “becoming-imperceptible” further enhances this exploration. Ultimately, this study aims to provide new perspectives on the intersection of philosophy, theology, and film in exploring themes of suffering and spiritual transformation.
