Spiritual theology is an integrative discipline of theory and praxis in Christian spirituality. Thus, it needs to be grounded in both theological and methodological bases. However, neither theology nor methodology of Christian spirituality can be properly formulated apart from the actual experiential understanding of spiritual reality?in human, angelic/demonic, natural/worldly, and divine realms. In other words, spiritual theology must be consistent with the understanding of spiritual reality based on the actual phenomenological encounter with such reality. In this sense, spiritual theology is a discipline which is more closely related to phenomenological, rather than propositional, epistemology. In spiritual theology, then, it is important to ask: What does it mean to experience spiritual reality, and especially God? Is it possible to experience spiritual reality, and especially God, in the present? If so, how can we actually experience such spiritual reality, and especially God? Moreover, what are the conditions for a genuine experience of spiritual reality, and especially God? In the real world, in order to experience any form of reality, we must somehow be able to perceive this reality. Apart from a genuine perception of an actual object or phenomenon, we cannot say that we are truly experiencing it. In general, the perception in the natural realm involves the use of both physical, mental, and affectional senses. Thus, if there are natural senses with which we may perceive physical and psychological realities, then there must also be spiritual sense(s) with which we may be able to perceive spiritual reality. And if this is indeed true, then we human beings are wholly epistemic in nature so as to perceive and interact with not only the physical/material reality, but also the spiritual reality, even the presence of God (via sensus divinitas). The purpose of this thesis, then, is to examine the whole realm of human senses, while focusing particularly on the concept of spiritual sense(s) necessary for perceiving God. In the process, an integrative understanding of spiritual perception?incorporating the somakinesthetic, aesthetic, moral, and communal elements ?will be proposed. The outline of the thesis is as follows: (1) spiritual senseperception in the Scripture; (2) spiritual sense-perception in church history; (3) integrative understanding of human sense-perception; and (4) significance of sense-perception for spiritual theology.
