This paper examines the ways in which Chicana/o politics of freedom is metaphorically represented in Cherríe Moraga’s Heart of the Earth as a rewriting of the Quiché creation myth. Drawing on Gloria Anzaldúa’s borderlands theory along with the concepts of religious hybridity, female power, and Maya creation myth, the paper highlights how Moraga’s vision of “humankind” merges indigenous and feminist perspectives. This synthesis portrays freedom as a journey of liberation from physical and psychological confinement shaped by intersecting forces of geography, race, culture, and gender. By affirming Chicana/o mixed identities rooted in cultural heritage and homeland, the play validates these identities as both powerful and legitimate. Through an analysis of architectural metaphors, the paper argues that Moraga advocates for “a new mestiza consciousness” as a guiding principle of Chicana/o freedom that transcends racial, cultural, and patriarchal boundaries. Furthermore, Heart of the Earth extends beyond cultural and identity politics, advancing an ecofeminist vision that emphasizes the interconnectedness and symbiosis between humans and nature.
