This article aims to compare the lovers shown in the movie L’appartement with the lovers of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and examine the aspect of Shakespeare’s metatdramatic features: “making an illusion” and “breaking an illusion” with the play within the movie. The dream-like experience of four lovers as they move from Athens to the forest appears as a romance in which the gazes of the four lovers interlock and become tangled, and two scenes of the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the movie appears as two story plots led by two main characters’ gazes intersected. This intersection and chaotic division show the irony that “making an illusion” in the play within the play is “breaking an illusion” as well. Making an illusion and breaking an illusion is represented as the process of love by main characters discovering their identities. Max’s gaze, which is desiring and desired by Alice ends in the final scene with his direction toward the despondent Alice, whose gaze is neither Lisa nor his fiance in his arms, or his Love nor Objet petit a.
