This paper explores the attitudes of both the Korean Christian community and Jong-chan, a non-Christian, toward others’ suffering as reflected in Secret Sunshine, where the issues of forgiveness and human suffering are addressed. Initially, forgiveness in Christianity becomes ironic for the main character, Shin-ae. Shin-ae’s understanding of forgiveness and salvation in Christianity is immature, while Do-sob’s (the one who kidnapped Shin-ae’s son) understanding of salvation and forgiveness is self-saturated. Additionally, Korean church members’ attitudes toward Shin-ae, who is enduring a desperate situation, show a lack of empathy. However, only Jong-chan (the other protagonist) displays hospitality and becomes an ethical subject, based on Levinas’ perspective. By showing hospitality to Shin-ae, he undergoes inner changes and encourages her to do the same. This exploration will provide insights into how to react to others’ suffering and prompt reflection on the Korean Christian community.
