This paper examines the activities and social roles of Gyeongsa(經師) during the Joseon Dynasty. Gyeongsa were officials belonging to the Seowun-gwan(書雲觀) or Gwansang-gam(觀象監), engaged primarily in tasks related to funeral rites, selection of auspicious dates, production of talismans, and reciting Sutras. Additionally, they were also involved in forensic duties such as examining corpses (or assisting in corpse examinations) and burial, similar to China’s Wuzuo(仵作), which related to legal matters. The hierarchy of Gyeongsa varied: there were Gyeongsa of central government belonging to Seowun-gwan or Gwansang-gam, regional Gyeongsa attached to local government offices, and independent Gyeongsa who operated without official affiliation. They were managed by local authorities through the payment of taxes. Due to their involvement in civilian funeral rituals, Gyeongsa were instructed in the principles of Confucianism to promote and internalize Confucian ceremonial practices in Joseon society. Through education, they sought to eliminate Buddhist-style funeral customs and establish Confucian-style funeral culture. While tasks related to funeral rites continued, the practice of reciting Sutras seemed to have diminished in late Joseon. This trend coincided with the exclusion of non-Confucian proposals from official discourse in late Joseon. However, the production of talismans continued. Independent Gyeongsa, not affiliated with government offices, participated in civilian funeral rituals, talisman production, and reciting Sutras. These activities were overlapped with those of shamans, and this fact made a perception in late Joseon that Gyeongsa were a kind of Dokgyeong-mu(讀經巫, shamans who recite Sutras).
