Amidst the global pandemic, many people—particularly youth— have been limited to communication primarily through social media and technology. Within this restricted context, the researchers explore the factors that influence the decisions and choices in young people’s lives, beyond mass media. Modern society has become increasingly appearance-oriented, with body image being closely linked to self-esteem. Individuals dissatisfied with their bodies in this appearance-driven culture often experience low self-esteem, which negatively impacts their overall quality of life. However, researchers who are professors at Korean Christian universities propose that religious involvement may play a significant role in influencing body satisfaction and self-esteem.
This study aimed to examine the structural relationship between religious involvement, self-esteem, and body satisfaction in a sample of Korean Christians and Buddhists. Based on a review of existing literature, they hypothesize that religious involvement has both direct and indirect effects on body satisfaction. They further hypothesize that self-esteem mediates, either partially or fully, the relationship between religious involvement and life satisfaction. Additionally, this study sought to investigate religious differences in the mediation pathway from religious involvement to body satisfaction through self-esteem.
