Beyond the traditional category of crime movies, the study in this paper revealed to the audience how the context of new crimes in the Chinese society was reflected with a crime story about overseas e-sports fraud, by exploring the relationship between the crime movie about online fraud with the theme of “preventing fraud” as a sociocultural sign and the deep public psychology. From the theoretical perspectives of narration and psychoanalysis, this paper tried to grasp the changing Chinese society through a new criminal phenomenon and public psychology, and conducted a deep narrative analysis of the crime movie No More Bets (2023) released in the Chinese mainland. As a new paradigm of Chinese crime movies, the movie reveals complicated human nature and greedy desires more clearly, which can be said to be of extensional and expanded significance in the corresponding category of movies.
To be specific, this paper discussed the gambling behavior of the protagonist and other characters in No More Bets from the perspective of Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalysis. An analysis of the protagonist’s motive, inner struggle, and tendency towards self-destruction revealed mental factors and emotional motives behind gambling. Based on Jacques Lacan’s theory of desires and concepts such as the self, the subject, the other and the little other, this paper interpreted complex connections between the protagonist’s self-image and gambling behavior, and discussed the internal conflict between gambling and self-identity. At the end, it analyzed the inner struggle that the protagonist experienced while becoming addicted to gambling, and discussed the process of his seeking extrication and inner reconstruction. The study wasaimed at deeply understanding the psychological mechanism for addiction to gambling in No More Bets, providing a theoretical basis for further research on this theme.
