In this study, we examine the forms, syntactic and semantic uses, and geographical distribution of the dative adverbial case markers in the Pohang dialect. The summary is as follows:
First, in the Pohang dialect, the adverbial case marker ‘-ege(에게)’ is rarely used for the dative case. Instead, markers such as ‘-kke(께), -ante(한테)/hande (한데)/hanttyae(한때)/antte(안테), -intte(인테)/inde(인데), -ogo(보고)/lbogo(ᄅ보고), -tteo(떠러)/deoreo(더러), -jatte(자테), -u(우), -ro(로)’ are used. Among these, ‘-jatte(자테), -ro(로), -ra(라), -daa(다아), -u(우)’ are unique forms predominantly used only in the Pohang dialect.
Second, the dative adverbial case marker ‘-kke(께)’ in the Pohang dialect does not convey any honorific meaning. Its syntactic and semantic uses are almost identical to those of the modern Korean adverbial case marker ‘-ege(에게)’. The honorific dative adverbial case marker is not used in the Pohang dialect.
Third, ‘-hante(한테)/hande(한데)’ is the representative dative adverbial case marker used throughout all 16 towns and townships in Pohang. This ‘-hante(한테)’ does not have any honorific function and carries the meaning of ‘the target of an action, the object affected by an action, or the starting point of an action being a person’. However, since ‘-hante(한테)’ is also widely used in the spoken language of other regional dialects, it does not specifically characterize the Pohang dialect.
Fourth, ‘-intte(인테)/inde(인데)’ is the second most widely used dative adverbial case marker in the Pohang dialect after ‘-hante(한테)’. It is used more extensively in the Pohang dialect compared to other regional dialects. The marker ‘-jatte(자테)’ distinctly characterizes the Pohang dialect, as it is rarely found in other dialects.
Fifth, it is also a significant feature of the Pohang dialect that a variety of forms of dative adverbial case markers such as ‘-ro(로), -ra(라), -daa(다아), -u(우)’ are used.
