Maca is a representative health food of Peru called ‘Peruvian ginseng’. Maca’s nutritional components include a large amountof essential amino acids, fiber, fatty acids, plant sterols, vitamin C, and other nutrients such as copper, iron, and calcium, and it has functions that help with human physiological activity such as muscle strengthening, alleviating menopausal symptoms, and antioxidant and anti-inflammation. As many domestic and foreign studies on the physiological activity of Maca are published, it is gaining popularity as a super-food, but research on improving damaged hair is insufficient. This study explored how Black Maca(Lepidium meyenii) extract affects the protection of bleached hair. Hair samples were treated with distilled water(W1, as the control) and varying concentrations of Black Maca extract(0.5%(M1), 1%(M2), 3%(M3), and 5%(M4)). To assess hair damage, absorbance was measured after methylene blue dyeing. Virgin hair(VH) had an absorbance of 0.11±0.01, while bleached hair(BH) showed a much higher absorbance of 1.81±0.06, indicating more damage. Notably, hair treated with 5% Black Maca extract(M4) had an absorbance of 0.36 ± 0.02, which was 80.22% lower than the control group. A dose-dependent decrease in absorbance was observed in hair samples containing Black Maca extract. This study also measured the tensile strength of the hair and found that M4 significantly improved this compared to W1. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy(LV-SEM) analysis showed that while BH had cuticle layer detachment or peeling, hair treated with Black Maca extract maintained a dense and orderly cuticle layer. These results suggest that Black Maca extract effectively protects bleached hair and could be a valuable ingredient in hair care and cosmetic products.
