This study compared and analyzed the machining characteristics of the AL6061-T6 aluminum alloy with various surface coatings used in rotary joints. In multifunction radar systems, rotary joints are crucial for preventing the twisting of cooling water pipes during antenna rotation and ensuring the integrity and performance of the seals. This study aimed to evaluate whether surface coatings maintain their functional integrity after machining and grinding. Test samples were prepared using the same design specifications by specialized companies. Each sample was coated with WC-Ni, Fe-Cr-Si, Cr203 (ceramic coating), and hard-anodized. The samples were then completed to achieve a surface roughness Ra of ≤ 1.6. A coordinate measuring machine (CMM) was used to measure and analyze the outer diameter, circularity, cylindricity, concentricity, and straightness of the machined circular pipe samples, and each parameter was measured five times to ensure accuracy. The results identified the coating that achieved the best geometric tolerance after machining, thereby providing valuable insights for selecting the optimal coating and grinding methods in the design and manufacturing processes of rotary joints.
