Korean traditional woman’s opera was a traditional drama style with classical pansori and traditional dance, and dominated theaters nationwide as an icon of Korean performing arts until the early 1960s. Kim Kyung-soo was the most popular star actress, succeeding Im Chun-ang, a leading male character actress in the Korean traditional woman’s opera industry. This study researched Kim Kyung-soo and his own specialized performance style, which was at the height of the Korean traditional woman’s opera. Kim Kyung-soo did not receive systematic or traditional apprenticeship education, but underwent a harsh education based on Im Chun-ang’s outstanding artistic talent and was skilled enough to become a star. The Jingyeong Women’s Opera Company performed the following on stage: <Love Tower>, <Before Flowers>, <The covenant>, <Goodbye without promise>, <Star>, <Lost in the Palace>, <Lost in the Early Night>, <Love Imagination Stick>, <The Throne>, <Lulu Crown Prince>, <Kanghwadoryeong>. Kim Kyung-soo dressed up in exaggerated costumes, wore red-toned face makeup, thick eyebrows and sideburns, cotton on his shoulders, or high shoes, emphasized his body shape with clothes attached to his body, focused more on content delivery than Im Chun-ang, and danced dramatically. These components were in line with the needs of the public. This study enabled us to find the reasons for the success of Kim Kyung-soo and the Korean traditional woman’s opera.
