This study aims to analyze the narrative structure of Korean learners according to Korean proficiency. Narratives are a type of everyday basic communication that is familiar to beginner Korean learners. In this study, the structures of beginner, intermediate, and advanced Korean learners’ experience and movie report narratives were examined using eight analysis criteria: setting, events, internal responses, goals, attempts, outcomes, endings, and comments. By comparing the level of Korean learners with that of groups of Korean university students, experience and movie report narratives were found to be mainly described as “comments and events.” However, although beginner level learners could provide detailed information on the central event, they could not describe the intention and strategy of the narrator in detail. Additionally, as the Korean language level increased, ”settings, events, internal responses, and goals” decreased, and they were found to approach the story structure of Korean university students. The results of this study can be used as Korean teaching materials using narrative structures, and as a Korean proficiency evaluation tool.
