This study aims to develop a group music therapy program to reduce depression in the elderly, to improve their self-esteem and ego integrity, and to verify the effectiveness of the program. To this end, the percussion-oriented group music therapy program was developed, and a total of 16 elderly people over the age of 65 were selected as subjects of the study. Eight people were allocated randomly to the experimental group and the control group, and the results of verifying the effectiveness of the program are as follows. First, the results showed that the experimental group, which participated in the program, showed a statistically significant decrease in depression, compared to the control group, which did not. Second, the self-esteem of the experimental group was significantly improved, compared to that of the control group. Third, the ego integrity of the experimental group was significantly improved, compared to that of the control group. Based on these findings, the percussion-oriented group music therapy was supported as a counseling approach that helps the general elderly lead a happy old age with a healthy mind. To improve the quality of life of the elderly, further development of various participation programs using music is suggested.
