Icchadon is a person who led the official recognition of Buddhism in Silla. With his martyrdom, Buddhism spread widely in Silla. In this article, I looked into the meaning of his name, 異次頓. And also looked the meaning of ‘猒髑’, the pen name(字). I also looked into whether 猒髑 and 猒髑 are the same.
Lee Byeong-do paid attention to the fact that most of Icchadon"s pen name in Samguk Yusa(『三國遺事』), a woodblock edition, If We shift the location of letters in his pen name ‘猒’, it becomes ‘犬+胃’; and then if we replace ‘犭,’ of the same meaning, for ‘犬,’ it becomes ‘猬,’ meaning ‘hedgehog,’ also read as ‘wichok’(猒髑)
I also examined Tripitaka Koreana (『高麗大藏經』) to see if 猒 and are the same letters. The same phrase is found twice in Sibsongyul (『十誦律』) (Sibsongyul Vol. 31, Tripitaka Koreana Vol. 21, p.809), as ‘猒惡’ and as ‘ 惡’. So we can see that both ‘猒’ and ‘猒’ mean ‘dislike.’ ” Therefore, we can see that ‘猒’ in Samguk Yusa (『三國遺事』) is not but the same letter as ‘猒.’ So ‘猒髑’ and ‘Icchadon’ did not mean ‘hedgehog.’ However, the problem was that the meaning of ‘dislike’ was included in the pen name (字) of Icchadon.
‘猒’ has the meaning of disliking, but it also means being satisfied. You can check what it means through the context in the sentence. However, when ‘猒’ is used in a name, it is difficult to determine what it means. So, when using ‘猒’ as a name, some of the letters may be modified to indicate that it is written with a good meaning, such as ‘satisfied and good.’ It can also be written as ‘猒’ with ‘田’ instead of the usual ‘猒’ character.
The time when Icchadon was called by his pen name(字) was after the 9th century, when Icchadon"s incantation project began in earnest. It is highly likely that the story of Icchadon"s martyrdom and his pen name Yeomchok were created at a later time. It is natural that the story of Icchadon who was martyred to be a Buddhist public figure, is embellished in a Buddhist way. In that case, we can think about whether his pen name was also called in a Buddhist style. Like King Beopheung of Silla, whose pen name is 法空.
There is ‘icchā’ in Sanskrit. usually interpreted in Chinese as 求, 愛: 願, 欲, affection, 樂, 欲樂, etc. The Sanskrit word ‘icchantika’ was translated as ‘心慾’ or ‘大慾,’ and was later also translated as ‘一闡提,’ a being that cannot attain Buddhahood. Its Chinese pronunciation is 一阐提 [yī chăn ti]. However, there are two types, the ‘斷善闡提’ and the ‘大悲闡提.’ ‘斷善闡提’ is literally a being that has no good source and cannot attain Buddhahood, who is also called ‘菩薩闡提’ because he sought the Bodhisattva practice of saving all living beings.
The ‘iccha’ of ‘icchadon’ corresponds to ‘icchā,’ and ‘don’ corresponds to ‘ika.’ Icchadon"s ‘don’ refers to a person who acts like a dory/dari; it can be seen as ‘iccha’= ‘icchā,’ and ‘icchadon’=‘icchantika.’ For example, ‘Sautrantika’ is a person who reveres sutras. Icchadon"s martyrdom was to save all living beings, like the ‘大悲闡提’ and the ‘菩薩闡提.’
If ‘icchantika’ [’Daebicheonje’] translated to Chinese characters in Silla is 異次頓, then the paraphrase of ‘icchantika/異次頓’ is ( =‘髑’); ‘髑’ is a personal suffix because it is said to be the same as ‘髑, 頓, 道, 覩, 獨’ found in Samguk Yusa (『三國遺事』). Then the relationship between ‘iccha’ and ‘猒’ must be resolved. Regarding ‘猒’, there are two conflicting opinions: "dislike" and "like". Since 猒 is used in the name and ‘猒’ is a special notation, it is highly likely to mean "good" or "beneficient". Although ‘icchantika’ initially has a bad meaning of not being able to attain Buddhahood, if the reason for not achieving Buddhahood is ‘icchantika’ of the 大悲闡提, then one becomes a ‘good person’ or a ‘beneficient person,’ I thought that the paraphrase for this might be ‘猒髑.’

이차돈은 신라 불교 공인을 이끌어낸 인물이다. 이차돈의 순교로 불교는 신라에 널리 퍼져 나갔다. 이 글에서는 異次頓이란 이름의 뜻과 이차돈의 字인 猒髑과 猒髑의 동이여부와 그 뜻을 살펴보았다.
이병도는 『삼국유사』 판본에 이차돈의 字가 대부분 猒髑으로 되어 있는 것에 주목하였다. 猒의 犬을 글자의 왼쪽으로 옮기면 犬胃가 되고 犬과 같은 뜻인 犭으로바꿔 넣으면 고슴도치 猬자가 된다는 것이다. 즉 그래서 위촉[ 髑]으로 읽었다.
그런데 『삼국유사』 판본에 猒髑은 8번 나오고 猒髑이 1번 나온다. 필자는 猒과 이 같은 글자인지 『고려대장경』에서 확인해보았다. 『십송율』 두 곳에서 똑 같은 구절을 반복하고 있는데 한번은 ‘猒惡’또 한번은 惡라고 하였다. 뜻도 ‘더불어 같이 일하지 않기를 마치 전다라(최하층 천민)를 미워하듯이 한다’라는 뜻에서 猒猒과 이 ‘싫어한다’라는 뜻임을 알 수 있다. 猒髑과 이차돈은 고슴도치란 뜻이 아니었다.
그런데 이차돈의 字에 굳이‘싫어하다’란 의미가 들어간 것이 문제였다. 염에는 싫어한다는 뜻도 있지만 만족한다는 뜻도 있다. 어떤 뜻인지는 문장 속에서 문맥을 통해 확인할 수 있다. 그런데 猒이 이름에 쓰였을 때는 어떤 뜻인지 확인하기 어렵다. 그래서 猒을 이름으로 쓸 때 ‘만족하다, 선하다’란 좋은 뜻으로 썼다는 것을 표시하기 위하여 글자의 일부를 변형시킬 수도 있다. 일반적인 猒자를 田이 들어간 猒으로 바꾸어 표기할 수도 있다.
이차돈이 字를 사용한 시기는 이차돈의 현창 사업이 본격화된 9세기 이후이다. 아마도 이차돈의 순교이야기나 염촉이란 字도 후대에 만들어졌을 가능성이 높다. 불교 공인을 위해 순교한 이차돈에 관한 이야기가 불교식으로 윤색되는 것은 당연하다. 그렇다면 字도 불교식으로 짓지 않았을까 생각해 졸 수 있다. 법흥왕의 경우도 자가 法空이다.
icchantika[일천제]는 ‘iccha+anta+ika’의 결합어다. icchā는 求, 愛, 願, 欲, 所望, 樂, 欲樂 등으로 풀이되며 ‘ika’는 ～하는 사람을 뜻하는 접미사다. iccha+anta+ika가 결합하여 icchantika가 되었을 때 들리는 소리는 ‘icchan+tika’처럼 들린다. 여기서 icchan을 ‘이차’, tika를 ‘돈’으로 음차한 것으로 보인다. 즉 이차돈=icchantika으로 볼 수 있다. 이차돈의 돈은 도리/다리처럼 ～하는 사람을 말한다.
icchantika를 신라에서 한자어로 옮긴 것이 異次頓이라면 ‘icchantika/異次頓’을 의역한 것이 猒髑이다. 髑은 『삼국유사』에서 ‘髑, 頓, 道, 覩, 獨’과 같다고 했으므로 인칭접미사다. 그럼 icchā와 猒의 관계가 풀려야 한다. 猒에 대해서는 ‘싫다’와 ‘좋다’와 두 견해가 엇갈리는데 猒이 이름에 쓰였고 ‘猒’이란 특별한 표기를 하고 있으므로 ‘좋다’, ‘선하다’란 뜻일 가능성이 높다. icchantika[일천제]가 1차적으로 성불할 수 없는 안 좋은 의미지만 성불하지 않는 이유가 중생을 위한 대비천제의 icchantika라면 ‘선한 사람’ ‘좋은 사람’이 된다. 이에 대한 의역이 ‘猒髑’이 아닐까 생각해 보았다.
