As Western-style painting gained prominence in the 1920s, landscape painting emerged as a significant genre in Korean modern art. This shift was largely led by the Western-style painting section of the Joseon Art Exhibition, established in 1922. Alongside figure and still-life subjects, landscape painting played a crucial role in the early development of modern art in Korea.
In the 1920s, the landscape paintings of the Joseon Art Exhibition introduced the public to a modern sense of landscape aesthetics. Cultural and humanistic landscapes were preferred over pure natural sceneries, with cityscapes depicting everyday life predominating. Both universal and colonial notions of modernity were intertwined in the landscape paintings of the Joseon Art Exhibition, leading to the genre’s categorization and institutionalization within fine art. During this time, the concept of the Joseon landscape also began to take shape. Various painting styles were adopted, including academic styles centered around Impressionism, the post-Impressionist subjective trends of modernism, and the Shin-Nanga style with Oriental influences. Notably, the radical new trend of modernism evolved into New Academism, which contributed to the rise of Semi-Abstract art and other marginal new art forms by the 1950s. Although Joseon painters were relatively few compared to Joseon-based Japanese painters, they embraced these evolving styles, leading to an increase in their numbers. Landscape painting became mainstream nationwide, laying the foundation for the thriving of Western-style painting in Korea during the 1930s.
