The purpose of this paper is to break away from the perspective of domination and oppression maintained by existing studies on Taiwanese novels during the colonial period and to newly examine them from the perspective of resistance, thereby deriving a post-colonial outlook. The paper first organizes the practical problems experienced by the Taiwanese people under colonial rule through novels that reveal the reality of their lives, examines the Taiwanese people’s response and resistance to these problems by dividing them into several categories, and analyzes their meaning. In the process, The prospects for postcolonialism were explored. Colonialism, felt by the people at the level of their lives, was realized in the process of implementing various governing policies of the colonial government through the police, landowners, sugar companies, and government offices. These governing policies were basically realized through legal and institutional reform, modern education and development, etc. based on the enlightened reason of Western modernity, such as rationality and efficiency, and operated for the purpose of capitalization to dominate the capital interests of the colonies. In other words, capitalist modernity is the essence of colonialism. Based on this, by focusing on law, capitalism, and the inner world of the modern subject, we identified the power relations operating in colonialism, looked for the character’s efforts to overcome them, and found the opportunity for the narrative to present a post-colonial outlook.
