The purpose of this study is to extract and validate features related to vocabulary proficiency for automated scoring of Korean learners" writing. Despite being crucial for the performance of writing automatic scoring models, research outcomes on features in the field of Korean education have not been sufficiently accumulated. Particularly, regarding vocabulary proficiency related to learners" vocabulary usage, various measurement indicators beyond frequency-based metrics have not been developed. Therefore, in this study, we developed lexical sophistication measurement indicators considering the characteristics of Korean and validated their validity through statistical methods.
The results of the study showed that in correlation analysis, “Low-Frequency word(Total),” “Low-Frequency word(Content Word),” “Narrow range word(Total),” “Narrow range word(Content Word),” “Intermediate Vocabulary(Total),” “Intermediate Vocabulary(Content Word),” “Advanced Vocabulary(Content Word),” “Academic Vocabulary(Content Word),” and “Sino-Korean Vocabulary” exhibited moderate correlations with the score of “Language Diversity”. In logistic regression analysis, “Low-Frequency word(Content Word),” “The Widest Range word(Content Word),” “Basic Vocabulary(Total),” “Advanced Vocabulary(Total),” “Abstract Noun,” and “Hypernym” significantly contributed to classifying the level of learners" writing samples, accurately classifying 74.2% of samples.
This study holds significance in extracting vocabulary proficiency-related features for automated assessment of Korean learners" writing and validating their effectiveness as scoring features. If research outcomes on various scoring features continue to accumulate, a comprehensive study of scoring features for automated assessment of Korean learners" writing could be achieved.
