Virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control is extensively studied to enhance the performance of power electronics-based systems, and thus, improving the grid stability, where various topologies have also been explored. For photovoltaic (PV) applications, energy storage like batteries is becoming essential in grid-connected PV systems to operate in the VSG mode. In order to maintain the minimum power stages (thus, high efficiency), the quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI) can be adopted. However, the inherent topology characteristics may also affect the dynamics of such a PV-battery-integrated (PBI) system, as the operational modes are complicated. Considering this, the circuit topology characteristics and control methods are analyzed in this paper, and more importantly, the limitations of the PBI-qZSI system are revealed for practical design and operation. Simulation results have validated the discussion. The analysis indicates that the PBI-qZSI system has the minimum power conversion stage being highly efficient, but it also needs a dedicated control to avoid abnormal VSG operations.
