Background: Unplanned airway extubation in the intensive care unit (ICU) negatively affects patient prognosis by increasing the length of hospital stay and mortality rates. Unplanned airway extubation can result from a patient’s spontaneous movement or an accident during treatment, such as position changes or inadequate airway fixation. As approximately 50.2% of patients who experience unplanned extubation require reintubation within 48 hours, early symptom detection and timely reintubation are crucial. During these emergencies, ICU nurses assess patients’respiratory patterns, monitor vital signs, and prepare supplies and medications for intubation. Therefore, this scenario-based simulation aims to educate and enhance ICU nurses’capacity of to manage emergencies, such as unplanned airway extubation, and provide appropriate nursing interventions.
Methods: This simulation involved an emergency requiring nursing management for patients who underwent unplanned airway extubation.
Results: A simulation-based program was developed to operate for 30 minutes and was tailored to ICU nurses.
Conclusion: Scenario-based simulations can be effective in training and educating nurses to enhance their competence in managing emergency care for unplanned airway extubation.
