This article examines the spaces and protocols of memorial services held on the anniversaries of past Kings’ deaths (忌辰儀禮), focusing on the actions of involved personnel, particularly the reigning King. The purpose is to explore the political symbolism of these institutional practices. Annual memorial services were regular events that visibly confirmed the new King’s status as the legitimate successor and reinforced his authority among his subordinates and vassals.
Two primary protocols are analyzed: the Seon’wang Hwishin Jinjeon Jakheon-eui (先王諱辰眞殿酌獻儀) and the Sangpyo-eui. The Seon’wang Hwishin Jinjeon Jakheon-eui involved the King paying respects to his deceased father (the former King) in the Jinjeon (眞殿) chamber, which was temporarily housed in a sacred monastery. The King would enter the Jinjeon chamber alone, offer a drink to his father, and then consume it himself, while the vassals observed from outside. This ritual underscored the King’s legitimacy and holiness, as only the legitimate successor could perform it.
The Sangpyo-eui involved the King receiving condolences from his vassals in the Jeongjeon (正殿) hall, symbolizing the King’s paramount status and political authority. This ritual highlighted the King’s legitimacy and ensured the vassals" recognition of his authority.
The selection of a Buddhist temple for the Jinjeon chamber emphasized the complementarity between Buddha’s holy authority and the King’s holiness. The Jinjeon chamber became a secretive space where the King’s legitimacy was solidified through the exclusive act of offering a drink to the former King. Conversely, the Sangpyo-eui ritual in the Jeongjeon hall symbolized the King’s supreme leadership and political actions.
