This presentation introduces one film, 《Mr. Baseball》, a tale of two baseballs in which an American ball player goes to Japan, experiences cultural conflicts with peoples in Japan, and they eventually reconcile through mutual efforts each other. I believe Mr. Baseball is a cultural text which offers a useful insight for understanding how popular ideas, beliefs, or meanings regarding cultural difference between two baseballs are (re)created, (re)produced, and (re)circulated within the baseball world and the global popular culture. Drawing on the concepts of the contact zone, orientlaism/self-orientalism, nihonjinron as sources of theoretical framework for the film, I argue that the film is a collaborative artifact produced by the complicit relationship between the US’ orientalism and Japan’s self-orientalism. That is to say, both use each other to essentialize the Self, manipulating the binary oppositions for their own purposes. Within this reciprocal network, the film eventually produces two different ideological functions each of which operates separately: 1) to reaffirm the US’ global power for cultural imperialism between nations, and 2) to reinforce Japan’s domestic power for cultural nationalism within the nation.
