The city of Seoul carried out "Vision 2030, Culture Citizen City Seoul" to rejuvenate old facilities and unused spaces and transform them into cultural venues. The city did so by leveraging modern and contemporary architectural assets to promote the cultural characteristics of the local area in urban revitalization. During this process, contextual design played a pivotal role. The objective of this study is to investigate cases of the regeneration of modern and contemporary architectural assets from a contextual design perspective and provide a design direction to enhance future value within the local community. The theoretical concepts related to regional identity and contextual design in urban revitalization were investigated and used to derive characteristics and analytical frameworks based on prior research. On-site investigations for selected case studies were used in order to draw conclusions. Our results are as follows. In the restoration and enhancement of modern and contemporary architectural landmarks, the preservation of historical significance achieved through the establishment of exhibition spaces, was prominently observed. The project effectively conveyed the unique stories of the local area through exhibitions or experiential programs, while providing an accessible cultural infrastructure. Further to this, the revitalization was achieved through a harmonious design that did not disrupt the surrounding environment. However, there was a need for spaces to enhance community engagement among local residents and visitors.
