Focusing on the bewilderment and paradox, which are the first feelings that can be experienced in the works of René Magritte and Mauritz Escher, this study aims to examine the similarities and differences by examining the circumstances at the time and the works of each artist that can be considered when dealing with their works. In the first half of the 20th century, the development of mathematics and science led to changes around the world, which affected other fields as well. It has affected art as well as literature and language, and one of the trends representing this is surrealism. In general, it is not easy to understand and explain universally when dealing with works of surrealism. This is because surrealists literally have surrealism in mind, such as unconsciousness or dreams. René Magritte''s works are the representative examples, and he did not welcome his work to be understood or analyzed, and he intentionally expressed it in his work through a device such as paradox. Mauritz Escher, who was active during the same period as René Magritte, did not belong to any art group, but his paintings made him feel paradox like many works of René Magritte. Unlike René Magritte, Mauritz Escher did not intentionally paint this and did not paint works in consideration of mathematics. However, mathematical analysis was possible in the various works he created, and he was a great inspiration to mathematicians at the time. Confusion and paradox can be seen in the works of the two authors, but René Magritte, unlike Mauritz Escher, depicted paradoxical forms and situations arising from hidden contradictions in the structure of ideas or languages rather than paradoxes arising within a standardized system such as logic or mathematics. It can be confirmed that rational explanation in René Magritte''s work is more difficult than in Mauritz Escher''s work, which leads to a clear mathematical interpretation of the results obtained through this analysis. This is due to the difference between the poetic elements of René Magritte''s work and the mathematical elements of Mauritz Escher''s work.
