This study aims to investigate and analyze the design characteristics of East Asian design under the cognitive differences between East and West, with the goal of exploring a viable development path for East Asian modern design. The research focuses on modern design in both East and West within the context of cognitive differences. Cognitive difference experiments were conducted to objectively examine the cognitive disparities between East and West. In addition, the design philosophies of five modern design masters were thoroughly explored and analyzed through in depth interviews, and a survey questionnaire was administered to 314 design professionals in the field. The research findings can be summarized as follows: Firstly, the cognitive experiments confirmed the existence of cognitive differences between East and West. Secondly, it was determined that there are similarities and differences in design thinking characteristics between East and West under the influence of cognitive disparities. East Asian design places emphasis on intrinsic relationships among design elements and the inherent connection between design products and users, while Western design emphasizes the opposition between objectivity and subjectivity. Thirdly, in the process of modern design development, contemporary designers can benefit from incorporating the outstanding design philosophies from East Asian traditions into modern design, while also learning from advanced Western design concepts. This integration of ideas can contribute to the value and advancement of East Asian modern design. In conclusion, this research provides an in-depth analysis and exploration of East Asian modern design by studying the design characteristics under the cognitive differences between East and West. It offers valuable guidance for designers to create unique and innovative design works in cross cultural environments. This integration not only enriches design thinking but also promotes a more comprehensive and inclusive development of modern design.
