In China, traditional Chinese incense has been used for thousands of years and plays a significant role in cultural life and the modern olfactory economy. Within the same cultural context, specific smells can lead to multi-sensory synesthesia experiences, resulting in the integration of sensory information. Although there have been some studies that have explored the interconnections between smell and other senses. Further attention and empirical investigation are needed regarding the relationship between smell and color associations. This research aims to investigate the correlation between the smell of four of the most recognized incense, namely Agarwood, Sandalwood, Ambergris, Musk, and the color associations made by Chinese people. Firstly, the classification and smell characteristics of traditional Chinese incense were examined theoretically. Secondly, the phenomenon of synesthesia between smell and color was analyzed. Finally, how Chinese people evaluate the smell and color sensations of Agarwood, Sandalwood, Ambergris, and Musk was investigated through a questionnaire survey with a Likert scale. The results indicate that different types of incense elicit distinct smell perceptions due to their inherent characteristics, smell features, and cultural backgrounds. It is noteworthy that color associations showed differences in terms of value and chroma, with warm and cool colors triggering different sensory associations. Furthermore, neutral colors(achromatic colors) also triggered specific associative feelings. More importantly, by analyzing the correlation between the smells and the associative color sensations, the suggested color directions to represent the smell of these four types of incense were summarized. This study is expected to offer a fresh perspective on the smell visualization of traditional Chinese incense, providing constructive insights for designers and contributing valuable insights to the development of traditional Chinese incense products in the olfactory economy.
