This study aims to examine the visual narrative of Mon Chaperon Rouge, the French picture book written by Anne Ikhlef and illustrated by Alain Gauthier, focusing on the motifs of ‘werewolf’ and ‘femme fatale’. Most picture books that retell Little Red Riding Hood use the Brothers Grimm’s version as a hypotext, followed by Perrault’s version. However, Mon Chaperon Rouge is uncommon in that it is an iconotext based on the French medieval version collected by Achille Millien, the French poet and folklorist and the version of Perrault. Especially, the motif of ‘werewolf'', one of the characteristics of Achille Millien’s version, was adopted in this picture book. Moreover, hybrid characters such as werewolf are a favorite motif of Gauthier, the French avant-garde illustrator. Thus, the werewolf is much more often used in the visual narrative than in the verbal narrative. By contrast, the femme fatale appears solely on Gauthier''s illustrations. In the graphic narraive, Red Riding Hood is shown having an inseperable ontological relationship with a snake; therefore, she evokes Eve, the first femme fatale of mankind as shown in the Bible. Through the visual narratives of ‘werewolf’ and ‘femme fatale’, the wolf and Red Riding Hood are not in a relationship of a predator and a victim, contrary to expectations. They face each other in an equal power dynamic as they are attracted to each other while simultaneously being a mutual threat. The two beings of equal power are in tension. Therefore, Mon Chaperon Rouge is not just a textual and graphic recreation of the fairy tale but can also be considered as a meta-narrative retelling that subverts male-centered ideology by creating the symmetric relationship between the werewolf and the femme fatale. In addition, considering the visual expression of the femme fatale’s diabolic attraction and sensual beauty, this iconotext is a crossover picture book aimed at adult readers rather than children who are traditional readers of picture books.
