Politicians and experts in all fields lament political polarization. Frustrated by the polarized political situation, citizens are calling for more flexibility from different sides. Blaming polarization has become a way to take issue with the enemy. Meanwhile, the political deadlock and anger created by polarization are very difficult to deal with. Political parties lead to polarization and voters follow it. Digital media promotes emotional polarization through partisan alignment. Serious polarization! The future is more serious. This paper deals with social media and the problem of political polarization among the various causes of political polarization. First, starting with the problem of social media and political polarization, the relationship between social media and political polarization, the domination of social media, and the extreme political situation, and then leave to suggest the problems of the policy and directions for improvement.
It is now close to common sense that the changed media environment strengthens polarization and hinders the consolidation of democracy. It is necessary to consider an institutional mechanism to overcome the problem. First of all, attention is needed on media literacy. This is because there is a fundamental limit to solving the problem of fake news through regulatory measures due to the rapid development of technology. The fundamental solution to the problem of fake news and false information is to develop the ability of consumers of news to think and discriminate on their own and to develop immunity to false information. This is why media literacy education is a key solution to solving the fake news problem. At the same time, it is necessary to restore the trust of the people by raising the level of the media and strengthening its transparency. To this end, it is necessary to activate fact-checking by a neutral organization that is not partisan, and, if necessary, institutionalize fake news detection using artificial intelligence. Above all, it is necessary to prepare a plan to revitalize and reinforced offline public forums, focusing on the fact that most of the fake news and false information are distributed online.
