The paper delves into the limits of Balram Halwai’s apparent success as a generous entrepreneur from an exploited servant in Aravind Adiga’s The White Tiger. To that end, it examines Balram’s life in the context of the Indian outsourcing economy dominated by the global capitalist system as well as the traditional Indian society. In the process, the paper demonstrates that Balram’s becoming ‘the white tiger,’ made possible by the use of violence and murder, only signifies his success as an exceptional case, and his mimicry of his former master is just an analogy to India’s annexation to the global economic system. It also questions India’s traditional constraints like the caste system and family, raising the need for an alternative system for India amidst the fast spread of global capitalism in the 21<SUP>st</SUP> century.
