Located at the southern Shephelah, about 40 km southwest of Jerusalem, Tel Lachish (Tell ed-Duweir) is the second most important city in the Kingdom of Judah only after Jerusalem. It is mentioned 24 times in the Old Testament in which it is described as one of the most significant city-states in the Canaanite period and the last city to resist the military campaigns of Assyria and Babylonia in the Shephelah.
It has been excavated six times until now and archaeological excavations have revealed the real feature of the city from the Canaanite period (Middle Bronze Age) to the Hellenistic period. From the year 2022, a new expedition to Tel Lachish (the Seventh Expedition to Tel Lachish) started on behalf of the Institute of Archaeology, Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Institute of Biblical Archaeology, Seoul Jangsin University, directed by Prof. Y. Garfinkel and the author. This paper is aimed at three points :
1) it reports the main results from the excavations in the seasons of 2022 and 2023; 2) it inspects the possible and new contributions to the current archaeological understanding of the mound from the previous expeditions; and 3) it examines, based on the new results, the relationship between archaeological findings and the Bible.
