The purpose of this study was to provide policy direction for the promotion of elderly health through keyword analysis. To achieve this, we collected abstracts from 4,689 papers published in the Korean Society of Sport Science from 2006 to 2023. Subsequently, keyword analysis was conducted on 190 papers that presented the keyword ‘elderly.’ Using Python packages, we analyzed the frequency of occurrence and four centrality measures (degree centrality, betweenness centrality, closeness centrality, eigenvector centrality) in the keywords. The results were then visualized, yielding the following outcomes.
First, the selected core keywords related to the ‘elderly’ in academic journals published by the Korean Society of Sport Science include ‘elderly,’ ‘exercise,’ ‘research,’ ‘participation,’ ‘group,’ ‘program,’ and others. Second, among the words associated with ‘elderly,’ keywords with high centrality include ‘elderly,’ ‘exercise,’ ‘research,’ ‘participation,’ ‘group,’ ‘program,’ ‘target,’ ‘activity,’ ‘physical,’ ‘impact,’ and ‘analysis.’
In conclusion, from an academic perspective, research consistently demonstrates the positive effects of exercise and physical activity programs on the physical and mental health of the elderly. However, there is a limitation in scholarly information that describes a comprehensive model for elderly health promotion, which poses challenges in providing information for policies aimed at promoting the health of the elderly. Therefore, there is a pressing need for research that can serve as foundational material for formulating comprehensive health promotion policies for the elderly, incorporating various aspects such as administration, education, ecological factors, social networks enhancement, environmental considerations, and behavioral aspects.
