Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of age-related muscle loss on signals within the central nervous system. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and participating in regular exercise as individuals age.
Method: Participants were divided into three age groups: youth, middle-aged, and elderly. Grip strength assessments were conducted four levels (maximum, low, medium, and high strength) using an electroencephalography (EEG) analysis system and advanced grip strength measurement equipment. EEG analysis was conducted during the feedback process to assess the brain’s cognitive ability to control grip strength, taking into account the muscle memory related to grip strength.
Results: The main findings are outlined as follows. 1) Effect of Muscle Loss with Age: A significant decrease in skeletal muscle mass was evident across age groups (F=8.300, p<.01), indicating a direct correlation between aging and muscle loss. 2) Differences in Grip Strength and Exercise Intensity: Significant variations were observed in maximum grip strength and exercise intensity, especially at the third level of grip strength, when comparing age groups with and without visual information obstruction. 3) EEG Analysis during Cognitive Grip Control: During cognitive grip control with closed eyes, EEG analysis revealed increased activity in various frequency bands across the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes of the cerebral cortex. Substantial changes in brain signals were detected, indicating an impact on brain activation.
Conclusion: In summary, this study confirms that age-related muscle loss not only impacts maximum grip strength but also proprioception, a crucial aspect of muscle memory. These findings provide valuable foundational data for improving the quality of life, not only for middle-aged individuals but also for the elderly in Korea’s aging society.
