Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of 8 weeks of high-intensity interval training and plyometric combined training on muscle damage indicators and stress hormones in college students majoring in artistic gymnastics.
Method: In this study, 23 male college students majoring in artistic gymnastics were randomly assigned to either the Tabata high-intensity interval training group (n =12) or the plyometric combined training group (n =11). Both Tabata and plyometric training sessions, conducted times each, lasted for 45 minutes and were performed three times a week for 8 weeks. The exercise intensity of Tabata training was maintained at 80%- 90% of the maximum heart rate, whereas for plyometric training, it ranged from 50%-80%. To enhance the effect of plyometric exercise, running exercise at 60%-80% of the maximum heart rate were also included once weekly for 8 weeks. The study analyzed these training programs on muscle damage indicators and stress hormones over this duration.
Results: First, there was a significant difference in the change in muscle damage indicators between groups. Specifically, 8 weeks of Tabata high-intensity interval training significantly reduced creatine kinase (p =.002) and lactate dehydrogenase levels (p =.003). Second, a change in adrenocorticotropic hormone levels showed a significant difference between groups, with a significant decrease in the Tabata high-intensity interval training group (p =.001). However, cortisol levels did not show a significantly different effect between groups.
Conclusion: Tabata high-intensity interval training appears to be an effective training program for improving the performance of students and athletes in artistic gymnastics.
