The aim of this study is to investigate college English language learners’ affective domains and perceptions of the generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool, ChatGPT, in speaking practice. The study involved 122 students from a university in Seoul. Over three weeks, the students engaged in speaking activities utilizing ChatGPT. This study employed an analytical approach with a one-group after-only design. An online survey was conducted to assess students" affective domains (interest, motivation, attitudes, and beliefs) and perceptions related to English speaking. The results showed the implementation of ChatGPT in speaking activity helped college ELLs enhance their overall affective domains. Besides, both the advantages and challenges of using ChatGPT in speaking were extracted, which would suggest its use in practicing speaking. This study is a significant initial exploration and the first to examine college English learners" affective domains and perceptions of speaking with ChatGPT.
