Living in a nursing home can provide elderly individuals the opportunity to form friendships and nurture social connections with others in a supportive environment. This study investigates the influence of floor plan layouts on social interaction in nursing homes. It involves a comparative analysis of three case studies from the Green House Project and three case studies from the Traditional Nursing Home using Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) to create a virtual model of each case by incorporating parameters based on a comprehensive literature review of elderly daily activities in nursing homes. The analysis centers on the architectural elements, including spatial configuration, distances from residents’ units to the communal space, travel path, and number of encounters. The findings reveal that Green House Project homes, characterized by their smaller, home-like settings, and direct access to communal spaces, has higher chance for encounters between residents, thus consistently foster more frequent social interactions among residents. In contrast, Traditional Nursing Homes, characterized by larger units and corridor-like layouts, tend to limit these opportunities. By assessing the connection between physical environments and social interaction, this study offers valuable insights for future design considerations in nursing home facilities to enhance the resident’s social well-being and quality of life.
