Historical imagination is a characteristic way of understanding history. In history education, imagination has three forms: empathetic understanding, structural imagination, and historical judgment. These three forms are not separate ways of thinking but interact or express accumulated.
Empathy is a means of understanding history. In recent years, historical empathy tends to be viewed as having both cognitive and emotional characteristics. When we think of empathy as a mean of understanding historical facts, we focus on the cognitive aspect. On the other hand, the emotional aspect stands out when we focus on the practicality of understanding history.
The structural imagination is to construct a narrative of a history that is empathetically understood. Structural imagination includes thinking forms such as subject selection, story setting, interpolation, and alternative interpretation. When constructing a narrative, we are doing this imaginative activity even if we are not conscious. Narratives can be composed in various ways depending on the subject and story structure.
Historical judgment depends on the subject of judgment. Historical judgments that frequently appear in historical thinking include sources-selection, causal judgment, and history transmission. Sources-selection determines which data are relatively important or which of its contents is highly reliable. Causal judgment is to judge which cause is important among various causes or to infer the probability of a causal relationship.
History transmission is a matter of narrative description. Narrative description is to effectively convey a narrative composed through structural imagination, and imagination is included in the narrative structure and expression style.
