This study aims to explore the phenomenon of ‘adjective → noun’ transition within the framework of syncretism and to delineate the characteristics of stages based on gradability. It sheds light on the proliferation of syncretic words by linking it to communicative functions.
As syncretism advances through its stages, lexical meanings are systematically categorized, and morphological features become fixed. Lower stages exhibit phenomena of noun omission based on context and situation, while higher stages demonstrate characteristics of semantic and morphological stability, conventional usage, and lexicalization.
Syncretic words, possessing the naming function, are well represented in signs, titles, and brand names. They prove effective in expressing semantic relationships between concepts, encompassing paradigmatic, antonymic, and hierarchical meanings. These words convey comparative and superlative gradability, as well as the speaker"s evaluative and emotional attitudes. In literary texts, they provide aesthetic effects accompanied by expressiveness. Furthermore, they reflect contemporary social changes and serve as efficient means of concise expression in spoken language.
Considering the internal factors specific to the Russian language and external factors related to communicative needs, the usage area of Russian syncretic words is expected to continue expanding.
