배추 검은썩음병의 원인균인 Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria의 방제에는 항생제계통 약제가 사용되고 있으나, 최근 저항성 균주 발생의 우려로 대체 약제에 대한 연구의 필요성이 증대되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 15종의 천연물질을 대상으로 X. campestris에 대한 항세균활성을 평가하여, geraniol (MIC = 250 μg mL-1), thymol (MIC = 125 μg mL-1), o-vanillin (MIC = 250 μg mL-1)에서 항균성을 확인하였다. 이들 성분은 문헌조사와 시료분석 결과 팔마로사, 타임, 국화과 식물인 Helichrysum oligocephalum의 식물정유의 주성분으로 알려져 있으며, 이들 물질이 갖는 X. campestris에 대한 항균성 synergistic effect를 분할저해농도지수 (fractional inhibitory concentration index, FIC index)를 산출하여 측정하였다. Thymol과 geraniol, 혹은 thymol과 o-vanillin 조합에서 FIC index값이 0.75로 a dditive e ffec t가 확인되었으나, geraniol과 o-vanillin 조합에서 약효상승효과가 관찰되지 않았기에 o-vanillin이 포함된 제제에 geraniol을 첨가하는 것은 약효상승효과 발현에는 큰 도움이 되지 않음을 확인할 수 있었다.
