The traditional classification of English affixes into two classes based on their phonological behavior has long been established. Class 1 affixes, impacting stress patterns and base segments, were thought to attach closer to the root than Class 2 affixes, which had no such effect. However, this classification led to the Ordering Paradox, where Class 2 suffixes seemed to appear inside Class 1 suffixes. Furthermore, some suffixes exhibited an incompatibility between stress shift and segment alternation, with Class 1 inducing only stress shift and Class 2 causing segment alternations. To solve these issues, Kim (2013, 2017) proposed a novel approach that separates stress shift from segment alternation. Kim and Woo (2016) further suggested a suffix reclassification solely based on segmental alternation. Following this new criterion, this paper reclassifies English prefixes based on their behavior in segment alternations, including degemination, nasal assimilation, and category-changing.
