Henry James elaborately focuses his literary attention onto the intricate relations between sounds and words, and he chooses them carefully to convey subtle shades of impression and thematic messages. In much of his literature, James attempts to create a sense of parallelism in thematic structures between sound and text. As an outsider and observer of Richard Wagner’s circle, James continually attempted to imbue his literary texts with musical texture as in Wagner’s operas where the composer delivers his artistic textual message through his musical texture, leitmotif. Wagner conveys philosophical themes in his music drama using leitmotif, and James may have wished to constitute the parallelism of text and music through the ability of musical text in his novels such as The American, The Portrait of a Lady, and The Ivory Tower. Consequently, James creates a successful serial of characters in his literature and consistently enforces public codes of renunciation that may conceal postmarital realities that are not easily experienced in their designated observers’ stances. His literature does not reach out into Wagner’s musical realm that expresses all the soaring heavenly high, winging through, rapturous sensualism behind the closed doors, and Jamesian parallelism of text and sound remains unfinished, whether intended or not.
