Most of the research on the apocalyptic Paul has utilized the comparative literature studies between Paul’s letters and Jewish literature, particularly second temple literature. Such a scholarly trend presupposes that Paul’s notion of apocalyptic originated from Jewish apocalyptic eschatology. The present research, however, does not adopt the same premise but suggests apocalyptic as a cultural discourse in the Greco-Roman world. The apocalyptic is about transcendent space and time, including the understanding of the people in the same culture regarding supernatural phenomena. When the apocalyptic imagination is materialized through a type of discourse, it has similar types, forms, and contents. When Paul introduces his notion of apocalyptic in his letters, he also invites his readers into the cultural discourse in which they share similar notions and thoughts of transcendent phenomena. Then, Paul conveys the meaning of his apocalyptic discourse by highlighting heterogeneous features compared to the cultural discourse. In light of this, this paper proposes that one may grasp the central notion of Paul’s apocalyptic through intertextual readings between Paul and cultural discourse. To corroborate such argument, the current research explores three representing apocalyptic discourses, i.e., the otherwordly journey, the resurrection and afterlife, and the origin of evil and sin. These discourses appear not only in Jewish literature but also in Paul’s letters, gnostic literature, Egyptian legends, Hellenistic literature, and Persian literature. Though they present differences regarding the date, historical background, author, and readers, they share similar forms, thematic formations, and content. Having said that, however, Paul’s discourses exhibit heterogeneous features from other discourses and Christ is the center of the heterogeneity.
