Demand responsive transit (DRT) bus operations, with anticipated time, economic, and environmental benefits, are being actively promoted in rural areas. DRT is a model that operates buses based on passenger demand, rather than fixed schedules and routes. The aim of this study is to assess potential improvement in the noise environment resulting from the implementation of DRT bus services. Five DRT bus operation scenarios were derived based on the locations of demand. Then the road traffic noise for each scenario was predicted by measuring the road traffic noise of the study area, focusing on the original bus route, and a three-dimensional noise prediction model was constructed to employ road traffic noise prediction for the five scenarios. The predicted noise levels in the existing bus route scenario were compared to the five DRT scenarios; the noise level in certain areas was reduced. The area where noise was reduced was influenced by traffic volume and topography. The change in noise level by the DRT scenario was highest in the locations with the lowest traffic and that were surrounded by mountains.
