Heterogeneity and Changes in Early Adulthood LaborMarket Transition TrajectoriesJihye Yi Abstract: This study aims to uncover the characteristics, internal heterogeneity, and changing trends of the early adulthood labor market transition process. Using data from the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study from the first to the twenty-third wave, employment histories of men and women aged 19-29 years old born between 1971 and 1990 were constructed and statistically classified using group-based trajectory analysis. Labor market entry types were identified with 12 types for women and 10 types for men, showing the diversity of early adult labor market transition trajectories. The proportion of groups with low degree of labor market integration has recently increased and non-employment group still accounted for high proportion. As labor market entry processes in early adulthood are highly diverse, it is important to understand the heterogeneity within groups and their distribution, rather than focusing solely on average trends.
