Just as the Bible teaches that human beings cannot live by bread alone, humans are spiritual beings. We may feel physically, mentally, and socially well, but still feel empty and struggle to find meaning in our lives. The spiritual aspect is indispensable for human understanding, and it has been understood that religion is responsible for this spiritual aspect. However, in the field of psychology that aims to understand human beings, religion and spirituality have long been regarded as one of the subjects to be avoided. When the disease treatment model of psychology pushed religion and spirituality to the margins of clinical psychology, the field of pastoral counseling emerged and flourished in the United States. And it also failed to become a defender of religion and spirituality. The purpose of this study is to examine the increasing interest in integrating spirituality into psychotherapy over the last 20 years. Additionally, this study aims to emphasize the importance of effectively integrating spirituality into the process of pastoral counseling and psychotherapy. The hope is that this increasing interest will lead to further research on the effects of abundant Christian spiritual resources, such as attending worship services, prayer, reading and memorizing the Bible, on mental health. It is also expected that the Korean Association of Korean Christian Counseling and the Korean Association of Pastoral Counselors will actively develop educational programs that promote the integration of spirituality into mental health treatment. To this end, I will begin by presenting two cases from the fields of psychology and social wokr that have contributed to the growing interest in spirituality. I will then examine the historical context of pastoral counseling and why the discussion of spiritual integration has not been actively pursued. Additionally, I will discuss the efforts made by American pastoral counselors to prepare for a new phase as the Association of American Pastoral Counselors faced a crisis of disappearing in 2019. Finally, I will emphasize the importance of actively integrating spirituality into psychotherapy in Korean pastoral counseling.
